Origin/meaning

The County Blankenburg was a very small county located in the present-day German state of Sachsen-Anhalt around the castle of the same name. It existed as an independent county from 1123-1707 and from 1707-1815 as Principality. when it was incorporated in the Diocese of Halberstadt. In 1815 it became part of the Duchy of Braunschweig.

The arms are those of the original Counts of Blankenburg in the 12th century. The arms are often seen quartered with those of the County Regenstein as the reigning family in the 13th century became the Counts of Blankenburg-Regenstein.
