The star symbolises the Virgin Maryand also refers to the native parish (Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce) of the bishop, the place of his pastoral internship (L'Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary)and to the principal patroness of the Archdiocese of Quebec.

It also refers to the faithful of Portneuf with whom he spent several years as parish priest.
 
The dragon symbolises the fight against evil as well as the parish Saint-Georges de Beauce where the bishop worked. Saint George is always depicted slaying a dragon.
 
The scallop was an element of the coat of arms of Saint [[François de Montmorency-Laval]] which recalls the training he received from Laval University and  his ministry as a member of the formation team at the Grand Séminaire de Québec.
