The Lightnings symbolises speed and the Electronic Communications and Warfare capabilities. The Wadjet an ancient Egyptian Symbol of Protection used to indicate the five senses. Here it is used to dentot andvance sensory and intelligence gathering functions of the Battalion. The Aztec Temple symbolises the Engineer Company and its Mexican and Central American Heritage.
The Blue and Red in the Distinctive Unit Insignia is the Colours of the 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. The Triangles symbolises the Four Companies of the Battalion working in cooperation to support the Brigade. The Chief alludes to the Physical Security Mission, suggesting Barbed Wire. The Four Saltires also suggest the Roman Numeral XXXX = 40, the original designation of the Battalion.
The Coat of Arms and Distinctive Unit Insignia, was both originally approved for the Special Troops Battalion, 40th Infantry Brigade Combat Team on 21 August 2008. They where redesignated for the Special Troops Battalion, 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team on 1 September 2008.
