The arms appeared for the first time in the first half of the 16<sup>th</sup> century and were supposedly the arms of the Lords of Oostkamp. However, the Gruuthuuse family, Lords of Oostkamp at the time, used completely different arms. In rolls of arms in 1560 and 1562 the above arms were again mentioned. The arms appear on the local seal on 1694.
