The town belonged from the early 14<sup>th</sup> century until 1803 to the [[Mainz (State)|State of Mainz]], and from 1803-1814 to the Grand-Duchy of Frankfurt. From 1814 it was part of Bavaria. The bishops of Mainz also granted the city rights somewhere between 1317 and 1345.
