Origin/meaning
The town developed around one of the castles of the Lords (later Vicounts and Grand-Dukes) of Baden and became a Markt in 1418.
The first seal of the town, dating from 1466, shows the arms of Baden combined with a plough-iron, a common village symbol. After the granting of city rights in 1590 by Margrave Jacob III of Baden, the plough-iron was replaced by the knight.
The knight was placed on a small mountain, and symbolised the importance of the town as a fortress. The mountain later disappeared.
