Origin/meaning

The arms show the lion, helmet and crest of the Governors (Vogt) of Weida, the Lords of Reuss von Plauen, who ruled the city for a long period in medieval times. The arms thus have not changed for many centuries.

The oldest known seal of Gera dates from 1350. This and all later seals showed already the lion. The family used the lion already in the 12th century, but the origin is not very clear.
