Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on March 21, 2002.
The province is comprised of parts of the former historical provinces/territories of: Abov, Turnya, Spis, Zemplin, Uh and Gemer.
The upper part of the divided first field shows the arms of Abov, the lower part the pigeon taken form Turnya´s coat of arms (see the arms of the province Abaúj-Torna during the Hungarian reign). The lion is taken from the first quarter of the Spis coat of arms. The third quarter combines elements from the arms of Zemplin and Uh. The fourth quarter shows the castle of the Gemer region (see the arms of the province Gómór during the Hungarian reign)
