  • (1912) Ein von Gold über Rot geteilter Schild, oben gekreuzt ein schwarzer Schlägel und ein schwrzer Hammer, unten ein mit einer Sonne geziertes silbernes Zifferblatt mit schwarzen Ziffern.
  • (2007) Geteilt; oben in Gold schräggekreuzt zwei schwarze Berghämmer; unten in Rot silbernes Zifferblatt einer Uhr, darin die schwarzen Konturen einer strahlenden gesichteten Sonne umgeben von schwarzen römischen Ziffern.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on December 18, 1912 and continued in 2007.

The hammers are the symbol for the mining in the area and were already used on the oldest known seal of the city, used from 1561-1702.Two later seals, from the 18th century and 1815, also used only the two hammers. Even Otto Hupp still used only the hammers in the Kaffee Hag albums (see below), dating a decade after the 1912 grant. The black and gold colours (derived from the colours of Sachsen ?) were already used in 1702.

After the decline of the mining in the 19th century the city became known as a center of clock making and the city thus wanted a symbol in the arms to reflect this.

The addition of the clock dial in 1912 thus was made on request of the city, but against the will of the State Archives of Sachsen at the time, as the head of the archives opposed the addition of new symbols to historical arms. The arms were then granted directly by the King. The result is that the official act is only at the city archives and not in the state archives...
