Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The shield is quartered by a cross of St. George, the patron saint of the bishop. The lily is the symbol of St. Joseph, his second patron saint.

The arrowhead is taken from the arms of a Czech family with the same name and thus symbolises the ancestry of the bishop. His name also means 'bishop' in English and the arrow is shown as a cross to emphasise this.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
