Origin/meaning

The arms are devised in the 19^th century and in use since the early 20^th century. The elements of the arms are derived from the historical seals of the village.
Erpel belonged to the State of Köln and the oldest seal dates from the late 13^th century. This seal, and all later seals until the 17^th century, show the patron saint of Köln, St. Peter, with two crossed keys, his symbol. In the 18^th century the three crowns, the symbol of Trinity and also part of the arms of the city of Köln, replaced St. Peter on the seals. The last seal, dating form the early 19^th century, only shows the cross of the State of Köln.
