Arms of Smiltene (town)

Official blazon

Zilā laukā zelta trejkalne, augšā trīs uz labo pusi lidojoši sudraba vanagi.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1925.

After the conquest of the Talava land of the Latgali, the Teutonic Order gave the Smiltene settlement to the archbishop of Riga, and he built a castle Smilten here.
In 1427 the town is first mentioned. The Northern war (1700-1721) destroyed the town, and it became a manor. In the 19th century Smiltene developed again and in 1920 city rights were granted.

The arms show three hills and three silver hawks. Smiltene is situated on hills. Hawks encourage inhabitants of Smiltene to be proud.
