Origin/meaning

Bitburg was already in the 12th century an important town, but received its city rights not before 1262. Seals are known since 1248. The seals show a castle or city, which gradually evolved into the present arms. First the crosses and stars were added and the castle slowly became smaller. The castle represents both the city rank as well as the -burg (castle) part of the name. The present arms were granted in 1909. It also forms part of the arms of the county Bitburg.
