Origin/meaning
The oldest seal of the town dates from the late 14th century and already shows a large (canting) castle (Burg), most likely the local Herzogsburg. All later seals and images have shown a castle, but the size and shape of the castle has varied widely, and sometimes the castle was shown on a small hill in the base of the shield. The above image is used since the late 19th century and corresponds to the image on the oldest seal.
