GEORGE JOSEPH GOTTWALD

Born : May 12, 1914
Deceased : March 11, 2002

Auxiliary Bishop of Saint Louis, 1961-1988; Titular Bishop of Cedamusa

Arms (crest) of George Joseph Gottwald

Official blazon

Quarterly azure and argent, a cross throughout gules, in the first quarter a dexter hand in benediction issuing from the chief or, in the fourth quarter a lily of the second. Motto: Fiat Voluntas Tua.

Origin/meaning

The red cross is the cross of St. George, the patron saint of the bishop. The blue and silver are the colours for St. Mary. The lily symbolises both Mary as well as St. Joseph, the second patron of the bishop.

The golden hand refers to the name Gottwald, god-forest, and represents here the hand of God.
