PANAMA CANAL ZONE

Coat of arms (crest) of Panama Canal Zone

Official blazon

A shield, showing in base a Spanish galleon of the Fifteenth Century under sail coming head on between two high banks, all purpure, the sky yellow with the glow of sunset; in the chief are the colors of the arms of the United States. Under the shield is the motto: 'The land divided; the world united!'

Origin/meaning

The arms and seal of the Canal Zone were approved by executive order of President Wilson of the USA in June 1915.

The image shows the stripes in the chief incorrectly; this seems to have been corrected in the seal as it was actually used. In addition, over time the land, sea, and ship came to be depicted proper.

Unfortunately we have no information on the meaning or origin of these arms yet.
