Official blazon
In Grün zwei aufgerichtete abgewendete silberne Barben, begleitet von zwei sechseckigen silbernen Sternen.
Origin/meaning
The arms show two fish and two stars. This composition is taken from the 16th century seals of the city. The fish probably indicate the importance of fisheries in the Saale river. The oldest seal of the city, dating from the 13th century, shows a castle and the patron saint, St. John Baptist. Later seals show either the lion of the Counts of Schwarzburg, St. John or a castle with the shield of the Counts of Meissen, depending to whom the city belonged at the time. Since the 16th century only the fish appear on the seals.
