Origin/meaning

The arms show two fish and two stars. This composition is taken from the 16^th century seals of the city. The fish probably indicate the importance of fisheries in the Saale river. The oldest seal of the city, dating from the 13^th century, shows a castle and the patron saint, St. John Baptist. Later seals show either the lion of the Counts of Schwarzburg, St. John or a castle with the shield of the Counts of Meissen, depending to whom the city belonged at the time. Since the 16^th century only the fish appear on the seals.
