Origin/meaning

The arms were designed in 1932, but only formally granted in 1948.

The key is derived from the arms of Bremen, as the Bishops of Bremen ruled the area until 1648 when it became a Swedish possession. The bear claw is taken from the arms of the Clüver family, who from the 15th century until 1648 acted as governors (Gogräfen) and judges in Achim.
