Origin/meaning
The meaning of the arms is not known, but described in a legend. The arms refer to the wedding of Beatrix, daughter of the Margave of Brandenburg, with Duke Heinchich of Mecklenburg in 1298. The area, in which the town is situated, was part of the dowry.
The city, however, only became part of Mecklenburg in 1348 and the arms only appear in the 16th cenetury.
