ÖBLARN

State : Steiermark
District : Liezen

Oblarn.jpg

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on September 23, 1996.

In the High Middle Ages, Öblarn was property of the Hochfreien von Machland. The term "Hochfreier" roughly means someone who, in the Middle Ages, is equally noble to the Landesfürst. It somehow resembles the French nobility of the Ancien Regime.

The pales in the arms were taken from the (attributed) arms of the von Machland family. The field was changed to ermine, because the Hochfreien were equals to the Landesfürst. The cross of St. Andrew stands for the patron-saint of the church.
