Origin/meaning

Weil was founded by the Staufen family as a city in 1241. Shortly afterwards the city acquired the rank of Imperial City. Hence all seals from 1272 until the 18th century all show the imperial eagle. Besides the shield with the imperial eagle in 1534 two shields were placed. One with the arms of the city of Rome, one with two crossed keys. In the 19th century the three shields were combined to the present arms.

The arms of Rome indicate the presence of a Roman fortress in the area, the two keys are the symbol of St. Peter, patron saint of the city.
