Origin/meaning

The city was a possession of the State of Augsburg from 1311-1803. The oldest seal dates from around 1500 and shows the arms of Augsburg, a shield divided from red and silver. The arms of the State were continued by the city and granted in 1834. In the late 19^th century, however, the shield was changed into divided of silver and gold, the golden part with a tree green tree branch (probably beech, Buche=beech), see image below.

In 1950 the old arms were officially restored.
