MICHAEL JOSEPH CRANE

Born : September 8, 1863
Deceased : December 26, 1928

Auxiliary bishop of Philadelphia, 1921-1928; Titular Bishop of Curium

Arms (crest) of Michael Joseph Crane

Official blazon

Gules, a crane holding a stone in his right claw and two stars in chief, all silver; on a silver chief a sword fessways gules, the hilt to the sinister, the blade wavy.

Origin/meaning

The crane holding a stone is a common symbol for vigilance and here obviously also a canting element for the name of the bishop. The two stars represent the mother of the bishop and the sword in chief is the symbol for St. Michael, the patron saint of the bishop.
