A device of gold color metal and enamel 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in width overall consisting of a white five-pointed star centered upon an orange five-pointed star its points double-barbed, all upon a gold five-pointed star with the upper four angles between its points teal blue and each containing four small gold stars (totaling 16), and all enclosed by an orange scroll folded at either side, bearing at top in gold letters the motto “VOICE TO THE SKIES,” and terminating at the points of the star.
Origin/meaning
The blue background represents the sky, the unit’s area of operations. The sixteen stars allude to the unit’s numerical designation and the night sky, referring to the round-the-clock capabilities of Air Traffic Control. The star-shaped lightning flash symbolizes multi-directional communications and is orange referring to Air Traffic Control’s close association with the Signal Corps mission. At the center of the flash is a white star, alluding to the unit’s location in the state of Texas.
The Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 20 November 1979.
