History : Constituted 1 July 1916 as 16th Cavalry, concurrently organized at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. With Personnel transferred from the 3rd, 6th and 14th Cavalry Regiments. Inactivated 12 November 1912 at
Forts Sam Houston and McIntosh, Texas. Activated 15 June 1942 at Camp Forrest, Tennessee as 16th Cavalry. Mechanized. Broken up and redesignated 22 December 1943 as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 16th Cavalry Group, Mechanized; 16th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. Mech. and 19th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mech.

The 16th Cavalry was organized with personnel from the 3rd, 6th and 14th Cavalry. This origin is symbolises by the Canton, which is green from the arms of the 3rd Cavalry, embattled from the arms of the 6th Cavalry. The Standard is form the arms of the 14th Cavalry. Yellow is the Colour of US Cavalry and the Blue chevron indicates the old Blue Colour of the US Uniform. The Crest symbolize the Birthplace of the Regiment close to the US-Mexican Border.
