History : Constituted 3 March 1855 as 1st Cavalry. Organized 26 March 1855 at Jefferson Barracks, Mo.
Redesignated 3 August 1861 as 4th Cavalry. Mechanized 16 April 1942.

Shield : Or, on a pale embattled azure pierced by a sabre gules a canon reversed of the field and theron
a sable and a bayonet saltirewise and an arrow palewise all points down of the third.
Crest : On a wreath of the colors a cratered mount vert bearing a sabre bendwise or and in the crater a kris reversed gules.
Motto : Paratus et Fidelis (Prepared and Loyal)

Origin/meaning

The Field is Yellow for Cavalry. The attack on the entrenchments at Selma is symbolized by the embattled pale and the Bayonet.
The Capture of Hood's Artillery is indicated by the reversed Canon. The Sabre reversed symbolize the rout of the confederate Cavalry at
Murfreesboro. Participation in the Indian Wars is indicated by the reversed Arrow. The Crest symbolizes the defeat of the Moros in the Philippines.
