History:  Constituted as 555 Bombardment Squadron (Medium) on 25 November 1942.  Activated on 1 December 1942.  Redesignated as: 555 Bombardment Squadron, Medium, on 9 October 1944; 555 Bombardment Squadron, Light, on 23 June 1945.  Inactivated on 7 November 1945.  Redesignated as 555 Tactical Fighter Squadron, activated, and organized, on 8 January 1964.  Redesignated as: 555 Tactical Fighter Training Squadron on 5 July 1974; 555 Fighter Squadron on 1 November 1991.  Inactivated on 25 March 1994.  Activated on 1 April 1994. Combat in European Theater of Operations, 30 July 1943–3 May 1945.  Participated in operations, exercises, and tests of the Tactical Air Command, 1964-1966, including temporary duty with Pacific Air Forces, December 1964-March 1965, and December 1965-February 1966.  Combat operations in Southeast Asia, Feb 1966 until close of hostilities.  Destroyed 38 MIGs.  Two men of the 555th Squadron became aces: Capt Richard S. Ritchie and Capt Charles B. DeBellevue.  Transferred without personnel and equipment to Luke AFB, AZ in 1974; redesignated as a tactical fighter squadron; manned and equipped for new mission of providing tactical fighter training for US and allied military personnel.  Trained US military and selected allied military F-15 pilots, July 1974-March 1994. Some personnel deployed to Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, November 1990-March 1991.  Since, 1994, conducted air operations as required in support of US and NATO taskings, including Operations Deny Flight, deliberate Force, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
