A gold color metal and enamel device 1 inch (2.54 cm) in height consisting of a maroon cross enclosed by a white annulet between two stylized medieval surgical instruments also in maroon all centered upon a background of sixteen pointed gold rays.

Origin/meaning

Maroon and white are the colors used for the Army Medical Department. The maroon cross represents medical aid and assistance and the annulet, simulating a wheel, alludes to the Hospital’s mobility. The surgical specialty of the Hospital is indicated by the stylized medieval surgeon’s instruments at either side of the annulet and the gold rays issuant from center refer to the sun as the source of life and health.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 73d Surgical Hospital on 3 August 1972. It was redesignated for the 73d Combat Support Hospital on 5 November 1976. Literature: Image and Information from The Institute of Heraldry, US Army.
