Origin/meaning

The original arms of the abbey are the two crossed keys, impaled with a paly shield with a silver canton. The two crossed keys refer to the the abbey and the convent, which in medieval times were housed in the same building. The meaning of the other half is not known.

Already in the 15th century other elements are included; three crowns (maybe for the 3 Royal founders ?) and three fleur-de-lys (meaning unknown). The fleur-de-lys were only used in the 17th century and can for example be seen in the arms of Abbot Halbherr, see below, who used his own arms in the fourth quarter. In the 18th century a second shield appears next to the abbey arms, showing Saint Benedict lying in thorns under three crowned roses.
