Origin/meaning :
The arms were officially granted on December 17, 1910.

Ahlen got city rights in the early 13th century and was part of the Amt Wolbeck of the Oberstift of Münster.

The oldest seal shows the canting eel in a city gate, over which stands St. Bartholomew, the town's patron saint. From the end of the 17th century only the eel was used, both on the seals as the arms of the city.
