Origin/meaning

The arms show in the first quarter the crown of the "Virgin of the Thirty and Three". It represents the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. She is also as patroness of Uruguay, with the historic title of Virgin of the Thirty-Three. With her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, María is recognized as a patroness of America and the Cathedral Church.

The second quarter shows a hyacinth flower. It represents the Servant of God, Bishop Jacinto Vera, first Bishop of Montevideo, model of holiness and faithful pastor, father and patriarch of the Church in Uruguay. In turn, the three colors indicate the divine life that the Holy Spirit infuses in the pilgrim Church, guided by the light of faith (white), ardent in charity towards God and neighbor (gules, red fire) and sustained in the perseverance and trials for the hope of God and in God (green).

The lower half shows the Cathedral Church of Canelones.

The motto: Amicus Sponsi (friend of the bridegroom) refers to Jesus as the divine Messiah, who, as Husband gives himself for the Church, to make her his holy and immaculate Bride. The new and eternal covenant, between God and men, is a nuptial covenant, between the liking of God made man and the humanity converted by grace into the Church, Bride and body of Christ. This covenant, which is entered through baptism, is updated in the nuptial banquet of the Eucharist, participation of the eternal wedding feast of the Lamb.
