ALMOSTER

Municipality : Santarém
District : Santarém

Brasão de Almoster (Santarém)

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on August 6, 2001.

The checquered bend is the symbol of the Cistercian order, as the order had a monastery in the municipality.

The two bicoloured roundels refer to the two political fractions in the Battle of Almoster on 02.18.1834, in which the liberal troops commanded by Marshal Saldanha, defeated the absolutist troops commanded by General Lemos. The blue and red roundel refers to the absolutists and the silver and blue one to the liberals.
