The center of the coat of arms is the symbol of the village, the Romanesque basilica of Altenstadt, built around 1180/1220. It is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Bavaria.

In order to clearly distinguish the coat of arms from other similar coats of arms with churches or monasteries, a so-called Greifenlöwen (lion with a griffin's head) rising behind the nave of the church was added as a symbol. The Greifenlöwen is also shown in the oldest coats of arms of the monastery in Steingaden, which owned property in the municipal area until secularization in 1803. Red and silver are also the colours of the monastery.
