Origin/meaning

In the upper part of the shield are displayed the symbols referring to the ancient Patriarchate of Aquileia, from which the Udine Archdiocese arose: the first, argent, the saints and martyrs Hermagoras (bishop) and Fortunatus (deacon), proper; the second azur, an eagle displayed or.

The crosier depicts the archiepiscopal rank, while the burning lamp stands for the word of God.
The four spheres recall the cardinal points.
To join the two parts, the rainbow is a symbol of the covenant between God and Man, realized by means of Jesus Christ, symbolized by the drop of oil, meaning He is the Anointed of God.

The motto is PRO VOBIS IN CHRISTO MINISTRI, (meaning: [I’ll be working] For you, o ministers in Christ.)

In remembrance of the ancient Patriarchy, the Archbishop has the privilege of wearing the patriarchino [i.e. patriarchal] red, the green galero thus is lined in patriarchino red, and not in green as usual for archbishops.
