Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal arms of the Bishop are taken from the original arms of the Brennan family of Ireland, with one change. The original Brennan lions hold a sheaf of wheat, changed here to a ciborium, symbol of the Holy Eucharist. The chief has been added in honor of St. Andrew the Apostle, the Bishop's baptismal patron.

The motto is taken from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians, chapter 7, verse 25: Consilium autem do, tanquam misericordiam consecutus a Domino, ut sim fidelis; the complete verse reads: "I have no commandment of the Lord, yet I give an opinion, as one having obtained mercy from the Lord to be trustworthy."
