ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBUQUE (Archidioecesis Dubuquensis)

Country : United States
Denomination : Roman Catholic

Established : 1837 as Diocese of Dubuque
Elevated to Archdiocese in 1893

Arms (crest) of Archdiocese of Dubuque

Official blazon

Argent, on a bend wavy azure, between two crosses-crosslet gules, three fleurs-de-lis paleways of the field.

Origin/meaning

Dubuque is named after a French pioneer, but there are no arms known from him. The blue bend is taken from the Dubucq family from Normandy, but there is no evidence that this family is related to the explorer. It is a suitable symbol as also the Mississippi river is flowing in a similar direction through Dubuque.

The three fleur-de-lys are taken from the French Royal arms and are chosen here for the French heritage of the early city. The crosses-crosslet are a symbol for Christianity.
