Established : The Diocese of Hamburg was founded in AD 834. When Hamburg in 845 was raided by Vikings, the Diocese was moved to Bremen and united to form the Archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremen, which existed until 1648. The Archdiocese of Hamburg was new founded in 24 October 1994, with effect on 7 January 1995.

The two crossed keys are taken from the arms of the medieval [[Diocese of Bremen]]. The star is the symbol for St. Mary, the patron saint of the city and Archdiocese of Hamburg.  The heart is taken from the arms of the Blessed Niels Stensen, apostolic vicar of the Nordic Missions (1638 -1686).
