Origin/meaning
The arms show a canting bear (Bär) wearing the arms of the Kings of Bayern (quartered the lion of the Pfalz (Palatinate) and the diamonds of Bayern). The bear stands on a green meadow, also a canting element (Au). The composition of bear with Bayern already appears on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1405.
The oldest coloured image dates from 1568 and shows a brown bear in a golden field. In 1819 the then silver field had to be replaced by blue and the arms of Bayern were removed. In the late 19th century the present arms were restored and have not changed since.
