In Rot zwei schräg gekreuzte goldene Bischofsstäbe mit zugewendeten Krümmen, die Kreuzung überdeckt von einer goldenen Mitra.

Origin/meaning

The two crosiers and the mitre refer to the Bishops of Schwerin who granted the city rights in 1236 and who had one of their main residences in the city from 1236-1540.

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, which dates from the late 14th century.
