Origin/meaning

Barby was founded as a city at the end of the 13^th century and has been the residence of many noble dynasties. The arms are based on the oldest seal, known from the 14^th century. The arms never really changed, except that the shape and size of the castle has changed according to the fashion of the time. The present shape dates from 1936.
