Barntrup received city rights in the first half of the 14<sup>th</sup> century. The oldest seal is known since 1370 and shows the star of the Counts of Sternberg, surrounded by eight roses of Lippe. During the 16<sup>th</sup> century the star and rose were combined and in the early 17<sup>th</sup> century they were flipped horizontally.
