BERTHIERVILLE

Province : Quebec

Coat of arms (crest) of Berthierville
Official blazon
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms are not officially granted, but have been in use since 1950.

The dragon is the symbol of strength and pride. It is the emblem of the town of Bergerac where Captain Alexandre Berthier was born in 1638, owner from around 1673 to 1708, of the seigneury to which he gave his name and on the site of which today stands the City of Berthierville.

The sword recalls the military valor and the warlike courage of Captain Berthier, who conquered his ranks and titles by arms and was gloriously wounded while fighting for his faith and his king.

The silver retort represents the Melchers Distilleries which was one of the two main industries from 1898 to 1985.

The flame evokes the match factory known as “The Eddy Match Company Limited” which provided work for the people of Berthelais from 1919 to 1957.

The haloed lamb is the emblem of Saint Geneviève, patroness of the parish of Berthier, who was a humble shepherdess.

The bar and serpent are taken from the arms of the Cuthbert family. This family, of Scottish origin, acquired the seigneury of Berthier in 1765 and owned it for a century. The serpent on a gold background is a reminder that James Cuthbert always considered Saint Cuthbert as one of his ancestors who lived in the 6th century and drove snakes from Scotland. Literature:
