As County Council incorporated as a District Council with the same name into : 1975 Borders (since 1996 Scottish Borders)
Additions to the District Council : 1975 Coldstream, Duns, Eyemouth
County Council
Official blazon
Argent, on a mount Vert, a bear Sable, collared and chained Or, standing in front of a tree Proper.
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on October 10, 1890.
The arms show a bear chained to a Wych Elm, a pun on the name of the county.
It is based on the arms of the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, now in England, but once in Scotland and the county town.
District Council
Official blazon
Argent, on a mount Vert, a bear Sable, collared and chained Or, standing in front of a tree Proper.
Above the Shield is placed a coronet appropriate to a statutory District, videlicet:-a circlet richly chased, from which are issuant eight thistle-heads (three and two halves visible) Or.
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on November 12, 1975.
These are the arms of the former county council, but now with a crown of a district council.
