Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1923 and confirmed in 1970.

Billerbeck received city rights in 1318 from Bishop Ludwig of Münster. The oldest, 14^th century, seal shows either St. Liudger, the patron saint, or the bishop of Münster. In front of the figure is a small shield with the above arms. The arms thus have never changed since. The arms are either canting (Beck from Bach or stream), or are derived from the arms of a local family, as a seal of Gerhard, judge in Billerbeck, from 1420 also shows a similar shield.
