Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on July 28, 1949.
The lion is taken from the arms of the Counts of Veldenz, who played a major role in the history of the district. The chequered field is the arms of the Counts of Sponheim, who held several estates in the district and who also founded the city of Birkenfeld.
Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
