Oorsprong/verklaring
Het wapen is sprekend en al in de 17e eeuw door Prins Maurits geschonken, zij het met een veld van zilver. De naam Blokzijl, ofwel versterkte sluis, is ontstaan doordat in 1581 Diederik van Sonoy een fort liet bouwen bij een sluis in het kanaal van de Steenwijker Aa naar de Zuiderzee. Het komt ook voor op een 18e eeuws zegel van Blokzijl.
