Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The city officially adopted the arms in 1971.

The arms date from the 13th century and show a castle with in the gate the rose of Lippe. The city was ruled by the Counts of Lippe, who founded the city between 1231 and 1255. The arms thus basically never changed, except that the rose is sometimes seen in a shield above the towers.
