Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on October 21, 1907 and again on September 25, 1980. The crown and branches were officially granted on May 12, 1992.

The arms are those of the medieval county and Counts of Loon, one of the most important families in the region. Borgloon was the capital of the Loon county. It received city rights in 1200. The seals of the city are known since 1301 and show the arms of Loon and a castle (Burcht, Borg). Ever since the city used the arms of Loon.

In 1992 the arms were augmented with a crown, which was also used historically, and with two flowering branches, symbolising the importance of the orchards and fruit cultivation since the middle of the 19th century.
