Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 19, 1913 and again on March 9, 1987.

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the village, known since 1574. The seal showed a shield with a bend. The shield is the coat of arms from the Hennin-Liétard family. The family acquired the estate of Boussu around 1200 and the family remained in possession of Boussu until 1804.

After th emerger the arms were agmented with a second shield for Hornu. This shield shows the arms of the Saint-Ghislain abbey, to which the village belonged until the end of the 16th century, combined with the arms of Abbott Hazart, which gave the village its own council in 1590.
