Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on November 12, 1982.

The right half of the arms shows a sword with a cross. The sword is used as a symbol for the local patron saint, St. martin. The cross is a canting element, for the -kirchen (church) part of the name. The left half is taken from the arms of the Lords of Winter, who ruled the area from the 15th until the 18^th century. The black and silver colours are those of the County of Battenberg, to which the territory historically belonged.
